How to Manage Sun-Damaged Skin
Learn effective ways to manage sun-damaged skin, from cooling methods and natural packs to hydration and when to seek professional medical help for sunburn.

It's common to get sunburned, and now is the time when skin care for sunburn is particularly needed.
Especially with the early opening of beaches and the rapid onset of hot weather,
outdoor activities are significantly increasing, and people are spending more time enjoying themselves outdoors.
Sunburn, or ‘sunburn’, is a condition where the skin becomes red and sore
when excessively exposed to sunlight, especially ultraviolet (UV) rays.
As more and more people head to the mountains, beaches, or valleys to escape the heat and enjoy leisure time,
many expose their skin to UV rays.
Symptoms usually appear 4 to 6 hours after prolonged exposure to sunlight.
Initially, the affected area turns red, then swells, and in severe cases, blisters may form,
the skin may peel, and there can be pain, itchiness, and fever.
Summer is indeed the season of exposure, and skin is heavily exposed to UV rays.
Therefore, the skin is prone to tanning and damage from UV radiation,
making skin care a fundamental necessity.
Especially during summer water activities, the skin tends to tan severely because skin exposed to water
is much more susceptible to UV rays, with UV penetration known to be more than twice as effective as usual.
People with fairer skin are more prone to sunburn.
And if not addressed quickly, it can lead to hyperpigmentation,
resulting in patchy skin. Therefore, if symptoms appear,
you should cool down the skin as quickly as possible with an ice pack or a shower.
If the symptoms do not subside, it is wise to visit a hospital to prevent secondary infections.

Sunburn Skin Care Methods
The most common method people try for sunburn skin care is natural face packs.
Cucumber and potato packs, in particular, help reduce skin heat, replenish moisture, whiten the skin, and minimize pores.
Since sunburn falls under the category of burns, lowering the skin's temperature is also a good approach.
Here are some correct ways to respond when you get sunburned:
Normalizing Skin Temperature
If your skin feels hot and feverish, the priority is to reduce the skin's heat.
However, excessive stimulation is not good.
First, take a lukewarm shower, but it's best to rinse lightly with water as soap or shower gel
can be irritating.
If the heat is severe, applying a cold compress with an ice pack wrapped in a towel can also help.
However, be careful to do this for only a short period as a rapid drop in skin temperature can stress the skin.
Also, applying ice directly to the skin can cause damage, so caution is advised.
Replenishing Moisture and Nutrients
Sunburn causes skin dryness. Therefore, it's good to provide sufficient moisture to the skin.
Replenishing moisture is also helpful when the skin is peeling.
When using moisturizing products, sensitive or fragrance-free products that minimize skin irritation are best.
Soothing gels that not only hydrate but also calm the skin are also beneficial.
Drinking plenty of water also helps.
For continuous skin hydration, using moisturizers containing ingredients like collagen, mucin, ceramide,
and vitamin E can also be helpful.
Seek Medical Attention
While minor blistering from sunburn is usually not a concern,
if you experience severe pain or notice skin discoloration, it's best to seek medical attention immediately.
Even if it's just sunburn, leaving it untreated can lead to serious skin conditions.
Sunburn can also cause skin problems such as wrinkles, melasma, enlarged pores, and loss of elasticity.
If inflammation, pain, or blisters appear, or even if there are no blisters or pain,
but your skin is patchy or
hyperpigmentation is observed, you should visit a hospital.
Skin is easy to damage but difficult to recover.
If a secondary bacterial infection is suspected, you should visit the hospital even more urgently.
