[Diva Plastic Surgery][Understanding Plastic Surgery Procedures] How to Enhance Functional and Aesthetic Treatment Effects of ‘Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty’?

Hello, this is Diva Plastic Surgery.

Among middle-aged eye surgeries, the most representative procedures are

upper and lower blepharoplasty.

The eyes play a crucial role in determining one's image,

so simply removing the signs of aging around the eyes can

make you look younger than your actual age.

Upper and lower blepharoplasty can not only satisfy aesthetic desires

but also restore the functional aspects of the eyes.

As these are highly popular surgeries, their effects are also excellent.

To achieve highly satisfactory results without revision surgery,

it's important not to consider only the cost, but to carefully

check whether the surgery can be performed with a customized design

tailored specifically for you.

Dr. Kim Jong-myung of Diva Plastic Surgery explained how to enhance the treatment effects of upper and lower blepharoplasty through a press release.

The eyes are sensory organs that collect and transmit visual information. Generally, vision loss or damage due to presbyopia, accidents, etc., causes significant discomfort.

Furthermore, when the skin surrounding the eyes sags and wrinkles due to aging, it can interfere with vision and cause irritation around the eyes, making it difficult for the eyes to function normally.

As we age, decreased skin elasticity can lead to drooping eyelids, causing functional problems such as narrowed vision, as well as drooping and wrinkling at the corners of the eyes, which makes the face look older.

In the case of the lower eyelids, they experience aging phenomena even faster than the upper eyelids, leading to sagging under-eye fat that protrudes or severe wrinkles, which can create a tired and dark impression.

The most representative surgeries applied to improve these overall eye discomforts and aging phenomena are upper blepharoplasty and lower blepharoplasty.

Dr. Kim Jong-myung (a full member of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons) of Gangnam Diva Plastic Surgery explained, ‘Upper and lower blepharoplasty are methods that can achieve both functional and aesthetic improvement of the eyes simultaneously.’ He added, ‘The surgery must be performed with a customized design that comprehensively considers the degree of eyelid sagging, shape, overall harmony, and skin condition.’

◆ Upper Blepharoplasty… for blurred double eyelid lines, narrowed vision, etc.

Upper blepharoplasty is a middle-aged eye surgery that corrects eyelid sagging by excising the drooping eyelid skin and removes wrinkles caused by the sagging eyelids to rejuvenate the double eyelid line.

Typical candidates include those with ▲blurred double eyelid lines due to sagging eyelids, ▲narrowed vision, or ▲drooping outer corners of the eyes.

Dr. Kim Jong-myung stated, ‘Upper blepharoplasty involves assessing the overall aging condition and the degree of eyelid sagging, then excising the sagging skin, protruding fat, muscles, and subcutaneous tissue through an incision along the double eyelid line. After removal, the levator palpebrae superioris muscle is located and connected to the skin, then meticulously sutured to correct the eyes into a taut and clear shape. By tightening the levator palpebrae superioris, the muscle that opens the eye, the fundamental problem of eyelid sagging can be resolved, and opening the eyes becomes much more comfortable. The recovery period for upper blepharoplasty can vary depending on the incision range and surgical method.’

◆ Lower Blepharoplasty… for improving under-eye sagging, under-eye wrinkles, etc.

Lower blepharoplasty can improve ▲under-eye sagging, ▲under-eye wrinkles, and ▲under-eye fat caused by thinning skin and decreased elasticity around the eyes.

Dr. Kim Jong-myung explained, ‘After making an incision along the lower lash line, the sagging skin and protruding fat are removed, and the loosened muscles are pulled and fixed to the fascia before suturing. This allows for the simultaneous improvement of sagging skin, protruding fat, and skin wrinkles.’

◆ Under-eye Lower Blepharoplasty

Under-eye lower blepharoplasty is favored as a middle-aged anti-aging surgery because it creates appropriate volume under the eyes through fat repositioning and simultaneously improves under-eye wrinkles and sagging.

Furthermore, the minimal incision in the inner fascia under the eye leaves no visible scars, leading to high satisfaction with lower blepharoplasty results.

◆ Combination with Lateral Canthopexy

If under-eye sagging is severe or reappears after lower blepharoplasty, lateral canthopexy can be combined.

Lateral canthopexy is a method of fixing the sagging skin tissue and muscles at the outer corner of the eye to the periosteum. It is known to correct the eye area without side effects such as ectropion (eversion of the eyelid).

Dr. Kim Jong-myung stated, ‘Sufficient pre-consultation is fundamental before deciding on upper and lower blepharoplasty.’ He added, ‘Through this, rather than just considering the cost, carefully verifying whether the medical team consists of specialists with rich and diverse clinical experience, whether they perform procedures suitable for you, and how they manage post-procedure side effects, is one of the ways to enhance both treatment effectiveness and satisfaction.’
