Hello, this is Diva Plastic Surgery!
A nose with wide and plump nostrils is often called a ‘bulbous nose’ (bok-ko) because it's traditionally believed to bring good fortune. While it might have positive implications in physiognomy, from an aesthetic perspective, a bulbous nose can make it difficult to achieve a sophisticated image.
The nose is located at the center of the face and plays a crucial role in determining one's overall image, along with the eyes. Therefore, if you desire a refined look, improving your nose is important.

If you can refine a bulbous nose, you can easily create a sophisticated image.
Today, Dr. Kim Jong-myung, director of Diva Plastic Surgery, discussed solutions for bulbous noses and nostril reduction for those concerned about this issue.
Discover how your nose can become more defined and sharp.

As the preference for sharp and defined noses grows, many people find the ‘bulbous nose,’ traditionally associated with bringing good fortune in physiognomy, unwelcome.
The nose significantly impacts overall impression, and even subtle differences in nostril size, shape, or bridge height can lead to considerable changes in appearance.
Consequently, if one has wide nostrils or a bulbous nose, it's often challenging to achieve a sophisticated image, leading many to seek improvement.
Dr. Kim Jong-myung (a full member of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons) of Gangnam Diva Plastic Surgery explained, ‘Generally, the ideal nostril width is considered to be the same as the space between the eyebrows and smaller than the lips. If the nostrils are excessively large or have a round, flat shape, the nostrils themselves can appear broad, making the nasal bridge seem lower than it is and giving a somewhat rustic impression.’ He added, ‘In such cases, many seek methods to reduce nostril size, such as nostril reduction surgery or alar reduction. These can be corrected through procedures like nose slimming injections and nostril reduction surgery.’
◆Nostril Correction…Nose Slimming Injections, Nostril Reduction Surgery, etc.
▲Nose slimming injections consist of collagen-degrading and fat-dissolving components, which break down soft tissue and fat in the nostrils, reducing their thickness. This short procedure naturally reduces the nostrils by shrinking muscle, tissue, and micro-fat.
▲If nose slimming injections are insufficient, nostril reduction surgery can reduce the overall size of the nostrils, including the nostrils and alar wings.
If only the lower part of the nostrils is wide, the two nostrils are tied together with a thread to gather the nasal tip. If the nostril skin is thick, the lower parts of both nostrils are excised to reduce their size, then gathered and sutured. This allows for nostril reduction to achieve an ideal nose shape.
Dr. Kim Jong-myung stated, ‘A bulbous nose, characterized by a blunt nasal tip and wide, thick nostrils, occurs due to excessive development of the alar cartilage at the nasal tip or a large amount of subcutaneous fat in the soft tissue of the nasal tip. Therefore, bulbous nose correction requires tailored correction through bulbous nose rhinoplasty for each specific case.’
◆Intranasal Incision
If the alar cartilage at the nasal tip is large or spread out, correction is performed by removing or trimming the cartilage through an intranasal incision, then tying the left and right sides together.
By excising large cartilage, the alar cartilage size is reduced, and the nostrils naturally gather towards the center, correcting the nose into a slender and defined shape.
If there is a lot of subcutaneous fat at the nasal tip and the skin tissue is thick, the fatty tissue at the nasal tip is removed to reduce skin thickness, thereby improving the bulbous nose.
Additionally, a bulbous nose can often appear in conjunction with a low nose, so combining it with a low nasal bridge correction using fillers can achieve even greater corrective effects.
◆Non-incisional Minimally Invasive Procedure ‘HIKO’
If there is a surgical burden for bulbous nose correction, the non-incisional minimally invasive HIKO procedure can improve a bulbous nose.
HIKO is a procedure that combines PDO threads and fillers, allowing for a delicate and three-dimensional nose shape, as if rhinoplasty had been performed. By inserting dissolvable threads into the nasal bridge and tip, then injecting fillers, the desired nasal bridge and nose shape can be achieved.
Dr. Kim Jong-myung said, ‘If you are considering bulbous nose or nostril reduction, it is crucial to have a thorough consultation with a specialist to apply customized designs and procedures/surgeries based on your individual nose condition and preferred design. Therefore, choosing a hospital with experienced specialists in nose surgery is one of the ways to enhance both treatment effectiveness and satisfaction.’
