A Quick Look at Autologous Tissue Rhinoplasty Implants: Types, Pros, and Cons

Explore the types, advantages, and disadvantages of autologous tissue implants used in rhinoplasty, offering a natural alternative to artificial materials.

A Quick Look at Autologous Tissue Rhinoplasty Implants: Types, Pros, and Cons

The nose, located at the center of the face, plays a significant role in determining a person's first impression and overall atmosphere, holding the largest share in the shape of facial features.

Therefore, anyone dissatisfied with their nose shape—be it a bulbous nose, aquiline nose, droopy nose, or upturned nose—has likely considered rhinoplasty at some point.

However, in many cases, the use of implants is unavoidable in rhinoplasty. This often leads to fear of the surgery itself. Most people hesitate due to aversion to artificial implants or fear of potential side effects.

For this reason, many plastic surgery clinics are utilizing autologous tissue for rhinoplasty implants.

Today, we will explore the types and pros and cons of autologous tissue rhinoplasty implants.

Ideal Nose Shape and Proportion

When the nose is divided vertically into five equal parts, an ideal nose is considered to be about 1/5 of the face's length, similar in width to the distance between the eyes, and have a nasolabial angle of 95-105 degrees. For women, if the angle is narrower than 90 degrees, the nasal tip may appear long or droopy, making one look older. If the angle is greater than 110 degrees, it can result in an upturned nose. Even with the same bridge height and nostril width, if the shape and angle are not natural, it is difficult to consider it an ideal and beautiful nose.

Comparison of Types and Pros and Cons of Autologous Tissue Implants for Autologous Tissue Rhinoplasty

Autologous tissue rhinoplasty, which does not require separate hospitalization after surgery and allows for stitch removal after 5-7 days, helps achieve long-lasting satisfactory results. It involves selecting the appropriate autologous tissue for each individual, harvesting the tissue from the chosen area, meticulously suturing it, designing the shape of the autologous implant to fit the surgical site, incising and dissecting the surgical site, and finally implanting the autologous material.

Types and Characteristics of Autologous Tissue Implants

Autologous tissue implants commonly used include autologous dermis, septal cartilage, ear cartilage, rib cartilage, temporal fascia, and autologous fat.

Autologous Dermis

Dermis is harvested from the thickest part of the buttocks, below the tailbone. Autologous dermis is characterized by its thickness and high elasticity, preventing it from spreading sideways, and once integrated, there is no deformation of the nose.

Septal Cartilage

This cartilage is like a plate standing between the two nostrils. Its plate-like form effectively helps to create a strong nasal tip support.

Ear Cartilage

Softer than septal cartilage and having a curved shape, it helps create a natural-looking nasal tip.

Rib Cartilage

Used to create a more prominent and refined nasal tip, or when septal cartilage is small or insufficient, or in cases of contracture. Autologous rib cartilage can be harvested, or if insufficient, donor rib cartilage can be used.

Temporal Fascia

Used to improve issues such as the implant appearing too sharp or severely visible after surgery. Wrapping the implant with fascia is effective in giving a softer and plumper feel.

Autologous Fat

Fat is harvested from the abdomen or thighs to raise a low nasal bridge. It also has the advantage of being able to be additionally injected into sunken or deficient areas after surgery without removing existing silicone implants.
